Tips for Preparing for a Headshot Session

As an actor, you incur the costs of having your headshots done. Here are some tips for preparing for and maximizing your headshot session!

– Know what you’re working with! Practice expressions in the mirror and be aware of any undesirable expressions you want to avoid.
– Rather than robotically responding to the photographer’s requests for smiles, think of enjoyable moments or events in your life to help you produce a natural smile.
– Don’t drink alcohol the night before your headshot session and get ample sleep.
– Don’t arrive late to your session.
– Keep your wardrobe colors basic and avoid busy prints or bold patterns. Choose colors that enhance your skin tone and hair color.
– Bring several outfit changes to achieve a few looks including casual and business.
– Be cognizant of your posture – no sagging or slouching! You want to exude confidence.
– If you wear any jewelry, keep it small and simple.
– Ideally, get your hair and makeup done professionally, including men.
– In advance of your headshot session, take digital shots wearing your selected wardrobe, makeup and hairstyle. Make sure your selections are working for you! Also study your facial expressions and ensure your photos are doing a good job in selling yourself. What do your pictures convey? What would a stranger looking at your headshot say about you?
– Select music for your shoot. Choose songs that will help you get into the specific moods you need.
